To mark the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry van de Velde (1863-1957), the Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire, together with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, have organized the largest retrospective ever held of this multi-talented artist, designer and architect. This major exhibition will be held from 24 March to 23 June at the Neues Museum in Weimar and from 13 September 2013 to 12 January 2014 at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels.
The exhibition sets out a chronological vision of Henry van de Velde’s life and work, using numerous a hitherto unseen ensemble of works of art and numerous documents. Some five hundred objects, including paintings, furniture, silverware, jewellery, ceramics, bookbindings and architectural pans, reflect the complex universe of the artist and illustrate the many fields in which he used his prodigious talents.
The King Baudouin Foundation’s Heritage Fund is lending a number of exceptional pieces from its collection, including the only ring that can with certainty be attributed to Henry van de Velde and several pieces of furniture made by Victor Horta (1861-1947), Henry van de Velde’s remarkable contemporary.
