The impact of the Second World War on Greece

8th of November 2019

The ninth Baron Velge Prize has been awarded to Professor Giorgos Antoniou for his work on the impact of World War II on society and current policies in present day Greece. To mark the occasion, Professor Antoniou will deliver an exclusive series of 4 lectures at the ULB.

The Baron Jean Charles Velge Fund, set up within the King Baudouin Foundation, supports research in contemporary history. Since 2012, it has financed the International Chair for the History of the Second World War, created in honour of Jean Vanwelkenhuyzen. Each year, the Fund awards the Baron Velge Prize to the author of an original contribution.

The 2019 prize recognises the work of Giorgos Antoniou, Professor of Contemporary History at the Aristotle University of Thessalonica, for his work on the impact of World War II on present-day society and policies in Greece.

To mark the occasion, Professor Antoniou will address issues of restitution, collaboration and resistance in a series of 4 exclusive lectures organised by the International Chair for the History of the Second World War.
