The Malines terrine, the Ondine table centrepiece and Marcel Wolfers’ Mirador candelabras are among the silverware masterpieces from the King Baudouin Foundation’s collection on show until 20 October 2013 at the New imperial style (De nieuwe stijl van de keizer )exhibition at the Umicore Zilverpaviljoen in Antwerp.
This exhibition is devoted to magnificent silverware from the Napoleonic period, during which antiquity was much revered. Mounted in complement to the Bonaparte on the Escaut exhibition at the MAS museum in Antwerp, this exhibition features the Empire style. The works exhibited form a dialogue with other styles that were also strongly influenced by antiquity, notably the neoclassicism of the 1770s, the 19th and 20th centuries. The Malines terrine is a wonderful example of neoclassicism. The Ondine table centrepiece and the Mirador candelabras testify to the assimilation of various styles post World War II.
