This summer, don’t miss the double exhibition at Knokke and Retranchement (just up the coast in the Netherlands) dedicated to the abstract art collection offered by Jos Knaepen to the King Baudouin Foundation. Sam Francis, Robert Motherwell and many other great names are to be found alongside the works of two Belgian artists: Luc Peire and Johan De Wit.
Sam Francis, Robert Motherwell, Ben Nicholson and Alan Green are just a few of the famous names represented in the abstract art collection that Jos Knaepen entrusted to the King Baudouin Foundation in 2013. This summer, the Jenny & Luc Peire Foundation in Knokke and the Ouwe Kerke Foundation in Retranchement will be exhibiting several remarkable pieces from this collection, shown in dialogue with works of two Belgian artists.
In these two contrasting locations – a contemporary foundation in Knokke and a former church that is now a cultural centre in Retranchement, in the Netherlands - paintings, statues and works on paper from the Jos Knaepen Collection enter into dialogue or confront the works of Luc Peire (1916–1994), the master of Abstract Verticalism, and contemporary artist Johan De Wit (b.1960), writer and creator of paper objects.
Figuration and abstraction, colour, line and form mutually interact. Coming from different artistic movements over more than a hundred years, from 1917 to 2019, the works exhibited on the walls and standing freely in space are sure to fascinate the visitor, deep in contemplation or intense questioning.
Separated by only some ten kilometres, the two locations are just a bicycle ride away from each other. It’s a dream of an opportunity to combine culture and a cycle ride in the superb region of the Zwin at the Belgian coast!
