The bookbinding plates of this evangeliary, made between 1228 and 1230, are formed by two sheets of silver mounted on oak panels. They provide a glimpse of the various techniques used by Hugo d’Oignies, including stamping, chasing, niello, filigree, mounted precious stones, cameos, intaglios and enamel.
For the central scenes, in which we see Christ in Majesty and the Crucifixion, Hugo d’Oignies respects the iconographic customs of his time. The margins, however, bear witness to his natural creativity. Such is the case for the filigree illustrated with hunting scenes with vine branches decorating the surrounds of the two flat faces of the evangeliary binding, creating an astonishing ensemble of lightness and interlaced relief.
The niello inscription around the Christ in Majesty indicates that the binding is the work of Hugo d’Oignies, and that he was familiar with the Holy Writings. He has even represented himself on one of the niello plaques.
