The King Baudouin Foundation and the Royal Museum of Central Africa are holding a seminar on 19 September 2013 devoted to Dr David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. The occasion will mark the 220th anniversary of Livingstone’s birth as well as the exhibition Dr Livingstone, I presume being held at the BELvue Museum in Brussels until 11 November 2013.

The seminar will take an in-depth look at Stanley’s meeting with Livingstone, the impact of their joint expeditions on Lake Tanganyika and the implications these had for the exploration of Central Africa, as well as Livingstone’s influence on Stanley. In fact, it was Livingstone who initiated Stanley into the indispensable organizational techniques for conducting scientific expeditions in Africa, whilst the two men’s meeting was to provoke a new direction in Stanley’s career.

Leading scientists from Europe and the USA will be among the delegates to this seminar. Entry is free but those wishing to attend are asked to register beforehand.
